DBNSW Virtual Series – Race 1
Dragon Boats NSW (DBNSW) is excited to launch its very first Virtual Race Series! Clubs will race in their own backyards and compete against other clubs by uploading their times online. The Virtual race series will run throughout the season and distances will be reflected based on the upcoming regatta. The Virtual Race Series is all about fun and bringing the paddling community back together.
How it works: At their leisure, clubs will race at their training venues at the prescribed series distance across the categories and crew size of their choice. Their times should preferably be tracked via GPS or Strava. Teams will then submit their times online via the DBNSW online form for placement on a weekly leader board. At the end of the race series period winners in each category will be announced.
Race distance & crew size: 200m. Small (10s) 10 paddlers, 1 sweep, drummer optional. Can be completed in either a small or standard sized boat but preferably a standard boat.
Categories: Junior Open, Junior Mix, Junior Women, Premier Open (Open Age), Premier Mix (Open Age), Premier Women (Open Age), Senior A Open, Senior A Mix, Senior A Women, Senior B Open, Senior B Mix, Senior B Women. Categories rules can be found here.
Racing & result recording: Club racing can use a GPS tracker such as a Garmin Forerunner, Garmin Fenix 5, Suunto Ambit 3, etc. If a GPS device is not available a mobile phone application such as Strava can be used, failing all that, a stopwatch is suffice. Either rolling or standing starts can be performed. Times are based on an honesty system.
Submitting results: Competing clubs must submit separately each of their entries, times and screenshots of their gps results. This can be done via the online form found here. It is currently optional to also provide results via the .gpx file type.
Submission frequency: Clubs may submit results for any category as many times as they like in a week but only the club’s fastest results of for that division will be uploaded. Online table will be updated early each week and can be found here.
Submission period: 19/09/20 – 7/10/20
Sweeping: L2 sweeps or higher. This event does not count towards L2 sweep qualifying races.
Other notes: Paddling must be in a dragon boat and no other watercraft. Trialling members are permitted to participate, please ensure waiver forms have been signed prior. Dragon boat heads & tails are not required.
Media: Finally, we would love to see lots of photos and videos of clubs racing and use them to promote the virtual series. These can also be submitted alongside results as well as some stories. Use #DBNSWgoesvirtual
